Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2016 Collection – New York Fashion Week

Fashion

If there’s one thing to be said about the latest Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2016 collection, it’s that there wasn’t a dull moment. With his in-your-face use of red, white, and blue, Jacobs quite literally celebrated what America means to him. And apparently that is a lot of different things. From the Forties to the Eighties (and every year in between), it seems the designer drew inspiration from everything he laid his eyes upon. There was glamour, grunge, street styles showgirl spunk, and a heavy usage of pop art that would have made Andy Warhol proud. What seemed to be sprinkled on top of the entire collection, however, was an idea of deconstructed Stars and Stripes.

Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

As for the variety of garments, there seemed to be no method to Marc Jacob’s madness. From start to finish, he created a fashion display that was as loud as an American Fourth of July fireworks show, which was portrayed just as he wanted it to be.

It is undeniable that all who were present were in for a wild treat. Yet spectators must have questioned Marc Jacobs’ thoughts when he was coming up with this fashion bonanza. One can only guess, but there are some valid questions to be raised; maybe even questions the designer had asked himself: why settle on going out with a bang when you can make each piece just as bold as the last? Why create a collection from one source of inspiration when you can mesh together multiple decades of fashion into one?

One thing that is for certain is that Jacobs celebrated diversity in his spring collection. He presented his models as actresses walking the red carpet (and even had them each stop on the red carpet for photos before continuing on to the real runway), each sporting a different trend from a multitude of decades. Jacobs also pulled in singer/songwriter Beth Ditto to model a white, embroidered gown with a high slit. Everyone from the audience to the models to the designer himself had a blast with this showing, and there is no other way he would have had it.

Although one issue I’m finding myself battling with is the idea of this collection as being ready-to-wear. There is no doubt that there are some beautiful pieces in the Marc Jacobs spring 2016 collection, but as an overall collection it seemed more of an attempt at celebrating his Americanism and creating an unforgettable, party of a runway show (a very successful attempt, might I add).

That all being said, as a collection of walking art, someone could look multiple times at each garment and find something new each time. There was clearly a close attention to detail that went into this line, and everything is pristinely executed, especially when looking at embroidery and tailoring.

There is no doubt in my mind that Marc Jacobs wanted his audience to walk away from an explosive performance, and he definitely accomplished that with the bright colors, prints, and uniquely eccentric patterns.

Jenny Packham Spring/Summer 2016 Collection – New York Fashion Week

Fashion

When it comes to New York Fashion Week we stand assured of seeing a generous amount of Hollywood-style gowns and frocks that are arrogantly spreading glamour and glitz all around. The British fashion designer, Jenny Packham is one of those initiators, who year by year comes to prove herself as one who is absolutely alien to casual style and casual manners, persistently adhering to her Kate-Middleton-esque style. It is not only Kate Middleton, who has been spotted wearing a Jenny Packham shift dress covered with yellow flowers or a pale blue one with white polka dots while leaving the hospital. Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, Uma Thurman, Miley Cyrus and many other celebrities have found something very familiar and unique about Jenny Packham’s designs. The designer’s eponymous fashion house, famous not only for designing evening dresses but also bridal apparel, has recently presented the charmingJenny Packham spring/summer 2016 collection, which was not expected to deliver something new and experimental.

Jenny Packham Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

However, Jenny Packham was partially innovative this time focusing on feminine and masculine monolithic energy that allows blurring all boundaries between the two sexes. She brings forward a very provocative frame of reference that the most attractive men have something feminine about them, while the most attractive women have something masculine about their character. She was mainly inspired by some feminine touches that her favorite musicians Mick Jagger, Nick Cave and David Bowie were emanating out. This very concept has been put in action to give birth to her spring/summer 2016 somehow androgynous collection.

Stating that the collection was all about Ying & Yan would be wide of the truth, as the runway was logically constructed in a way as to present a couple of androgynous options between ultra-feminine gowns. Actually, this concept proved to be quite effective and emphatic. The show, of course, opened with a masculine ensemble consisting of silk blazer and lean pants with palpable feminine elements like crimson wildflowers and leaves all interspersed here and there. Another masculine outfit that the onlookers were confused to see was the all-black chiffon shirt with sensually sheer sleeves all unbuttoned, paired with loose fitting trousers. Notable was also the floral printed blazer paired with cozy skimming trousers or chiffon pants topped with chiffon shirts all covered with flowers.

Jenny Packham Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

Jenny Packham Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

Between these bewildering pieces we could see Pickham’s signature glittering gowns embellished with studs or henna crystals that were mimicking multiple stars glistering in the night sky. Floral prints, appliqués or embroidery continued to find their place on massive ball gowns that seem to come right from a royal family. Sticking to the floral theme is somewhat trendy and popular this year around, so from this standpoint Packham is no way innovative but what makes her flowers different from others is their looking utmost natural on the models’ bodies, sometimes even turning them into real flower girls when there is tulle around. The embodiment of naturalism was definitely a mid-calf gunmetal georgette dress with cap sleeves and V-neckline that has been spotted by many fashion bloggers and fashion addicts as one of the most impressive staples in the collection. The palette of the collection was not only close to nature but also royal, among them being crimson red, lavender, rose pink, silver, grey and different shades of green like emerald and lime.

As for the models’ hairstyles and makeup solutions, we again didn’t fail in our predictions, witnessing ultra-natural wavy hair and pale makeup sometimes becoming bright by crimson red lips.

Thakoon Spring/Summer 2016 Collection – New York Fashion Week

Fashion

Thakoon Panichgul brought in the contemporary, the lovely and the rather interesting all in one pretty 34-piece collection. It was all about being cute, comfortable and spunky, with a positive attitude and a confidence in the body image that is undeniable. This is a collection meant for the masses and the It-Girls who love to show off their more relaxed, everyday styles. By combining Thakoon Addition with his main line, the designer seems to be having slight trouble finding his footing in the fashion world, as is also hinted at with his Thakoon spring/summer 2016 collection that newly appeared on the New York Fashion Week runway. While the opening was more focused on the denim, the high cut shorts and body suits, it ended on a more sophisticated note with sequined pieces and something akin to a tulle dress over a bathing suit. We have to admit though, the sleepwear grouping was a little on the strange side to see, including pajama shirts and terry cloth, one literally being a bathrobe.

Thakoon Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

Tie-dye seems to be in for Thakoon and the Bohemian style is blossoming into something a little more on the lighter side, with bleached, light in weight denim and silk slip dresses that show off individuality like no other. It was interesting to view, to say the least, as the designer took on the hippie trend and gave it the Thakoon flavour. Pretty much, we can imagine the ladies on campus loving this look as they can roll out of bed, put on designer clothes and still look just about ready to sleep. Or maybe they’ll sleep in these garments and just head to class looking as glamorous as ever among their sororities.

Just in case you actually want to put on some clothing that is relevant to a night on the town and not just to wear to classes or to bed, those sleek, bicolored broderie anglaise dresses might be just the thing for you. Though we have to admit to having fallen in love with the button down high waist skirts paired with tight fitting round neck love sleeved tops.

Thakoon Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

Thakoon Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

In terms of following the fashion trends? Plunging necklines: check. Frilly hems: check. High waist loose trousers: check. Culottes: check. Nipples showing through: check. Floral motifs: modernized and contemporary, but check. Our favourite trend noticed here though? That would just have to be the long sleeves on tight top regions with the triangular cut-out at the abdomen showing off toned muscles underneath. That and the cut-outs on the sides making the plunging necklines all the more visible and alluring, particularly on one particular black and white option with an embroidered set of triangles across the chest region and a very comfortable embroidered black skirt underneath. Thakoon might be struggling to find the perfect combination of styles, but we have to admit that he’s doing well with what he has at the moment as well. It is as well-rounded a collection as we have yet to see on the runway this season.

ERIN FETHERSTON SPRING/SUMMER 2016 COLLECTION – NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

Fashion

Erin Fetherston is always a desired guest on the catwalk, as we have admired her perfect ethereal collections since the very first day of her appearance in the fashion world back in 2005. You probably know quite well that she prefers her comfort zone more to experiments, almost never going further to denim or manly silhouettes. However, you will be surprised quite positively at the sight of the very thrilling, soft and fresh Erin Fetherston spring/summer 2016 RTW collection that has a nice combination of “old and new”. Having a peculiar inspirational background of fresh images with countryside air from David Hamilton and Deborah Turbeville, the designer created an amazing super-wearable feminine lineup filled with both fresh daytime and romantic cocktail looks.

Erin Fetherston Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

The opening look of the show is a bright orange dress on a youthful and natural looking model that creates the carefree feel of a stroll in the countryside. Then other “angels” follow her mildly stepping in lightweight floral, white Spanish dotted, chiffon dresses, transparent blouses, long chiffon scarf dresses with deep cut V-neck, soft cotton shirt-frocks. Nice ankle-length navy culottes appeared here and there topped with Gatsby-inspired transparent white dotted shirts that give such a thrilling womanly look to a girl without overwhelming in details. The collection has a number of luxurious smooth and fine long dresses that are so feminine and yet never too bright.

The shades included in the collection are very light featuring mainly whites, sky-blues and greys. Some pieces could be perfect for bridesmaids, and the long white net-floral embellished dresses will look ideal even for a wonderful wedding on the beach. There are two pieces that we would like to mention separately: the first one is the extremely simple V-neck thin-strap black skinny dress that looks just amazing on the girl’s body – it is like you can smell the scent of a woman even through the picture. And the second one is the minimalist light grey X dress that has tiny symmetrical dots and mesh inserts on the neck: wearing this I imagine a princess or an extremely elegant woman that appears on a gathering and leaves everyone speechless.

Erin Fetherston Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

Erin Fetherston Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

This time Erin decided to go further in experiments creating a capsule collection of minaudières, which go perfectly with any of the numbers in the line. This is a witty step in business especially considering the fact that the brand is well-known and anticipated. The small bags are round, with gold mirror rims and words like “love” written on them.

The whole feeling of the Erin Fetherston spring 2016 collection is positive, breathtaking and romantic, which is the very thing you want to gain in spring. Even the hair and makeup of the models transfers the light breeze with the natural hairstyles, minimalist makeup and flawless skin. We can surely say that the experiments that Erin brought forth this time injected a fresh air to the style of her eponymous brand, and we dare her to go further, as she has the ultimate base for success – talent!
